Winters Bone was
on TV last night: Jennifer Lawrence’s first real starring role. I’ve seen it
before in the cinema, thought it was tremendous; really excellent. Whatever one
goes to the cinema for, drama, story, performance, great effects or great
acting, this delivered it. Roger Ebert gave it five stars as did Bradshaw in
the Guardian who calls it a classic of the genre. It has 94% on Rotten
Tomatoes, a site I don’t trust but it is worth mentioning that there are no
dissenters. It is nowhere however on the BBC Culture Top 100 films of the
21stC: this is the list that has Pans
Labyrinth at number 17 and Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at 12 so as usual, I am out of step with the
cultural arbiters.
This is why no-one will buy my books.
